About Omkareshwara Temple

The Omkareshwara Temple is an ancient shrine devoted to Lord Shiva. It is situated in the city of Madikeri in Coorg, Karnataka. The speciality of the temple is that its production reflects a mixture of Gothic and Islamic styles. It is a popular spiritual vacation spot of Coorg. The temple draws a large number of travelers and devotees often. The Omkareshwara Temple turned into built by King Lingarajendra II within the 18th century. Legend has it that the temple turned into built through the king as a form of penance.
The story is going round that the king had killed a Brahmin to fulfil his political pursuits. However, the king began to have nightmares for his merciless deed. In order to free himself from the nightmares, the King sought the recommendation of a few smart men. They requested the king to build a temple of Lord Shiva to regain his mental peace. The king accompanied their advice and brought a Shivalingam from the holy town of Kashi and established it at a newly constructed temple. It is stated that the stopped having the nightmares king after the temple was built. This Shivalingam is worshipped as Omkareshwara.
